MICKY REFLECTS

Manager Micky Wetherall looks back at an historic win

Saturday’s FA Vase game against North Greenfield United FC was an historic day for the club, what were your thoughts on how the match went?

It was a massive day for the club and the people behind the scenes who work tirelessly to make this club what it is starting to become and yesterdays win was for those people!

The match was as we predicted, we came out the blocks well and got on the front foot hitting the post and creating early, so we knew the lads carried the confidence they have into the game. We watched North Greenford play at their ground so we knew how they would come at us with set plays, long throws and try to be compact and hit us on the counter.

To be honest, we weathered the storm well but their opening goal came from us giving the ball away in midfield and the striker finished well.

We knew we had bundles on the bench so we ware always confident we could score goals from many sources so we don’t rely on any one to score, whilst Dan Gilchrist is on fire we still have others that will score for us.

One thing we know is you need to put us to bed before we’re out of the game, these lads will still be busting a gut in the 95th minute, they're very fit and the belief in what they can achieve is massive.

What impressed you most about the way your team played?

Two things, the lads were thinking they may come to out play us being from a league above but they didn’t they stayed organised and played counter attacking football. They have a huge Centre Back who is very good at his job, so the lads managed the game well and changed to out work and dominate the midfield, particularly in the central areas.

Secondly, when going behind although having chances and creating with their keeper making some excellent saves, we didn’t drop our head and we kept plugging away. Obviously the subs had the desired affect and when introduced brought lots of energy. Alex was superb with two goals and assisted the cross for a bullet header from Craig Hall putting us 3-2 up.

Some crucial decisions made in your substitutions, what was your thinking behind this?

We have 23 players and all of them could start at any time. We have serious belief in these players and the lads that came on could of been introduced in any order but Alex and Bez were our attacking options with Bez recently coming back from time away and scoring a screamer he was unlucky not to start, but knew he would control the game once he was on the pitch. Not many in the league have that lads ability. Alex is one of the quickest in the league, but proved with a composed finish, a fantastic cross and superb strike to finish the game, this lad has a lot, not forgetting to mention it was his first game back from a broken arm.

The lads had been told in midweek so they knew who was starting and who wasn’t, giving them plenty of time to ask questions and get their head around the situation so that everyone was clear what was needed for us to come out of yesterday in the best possible position.

Did you enjoy the day?

I LOVE THIS GAME
